As the kids go back to school and before the first big snowstorm blankets the peaks, Keystone transforms into one of Colorado’s most spectacular, but underrated fall destinations. The air turns crisp, the nights cool and the Snake River Valley glows with brilliant shades of gold. Fall in Keystone is short but unforgettable—and it’s the perfect time for families, couples, and adventurers to soak up the magic of the Rockies in the newly incorporated town of Keystone.
Leaf Peeping Spots
Our favorite way to see the fall colors in Keystone is hiking or biking on the network of trails. A pro tip: Take the River Run Gondola to the of Keystone’s Dercum Mountain and either zoom through the aspens on a downhill bike or take a leisurely stroll down the mountain. The Gondola will be running on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through Sept. 21.
Or, take a scenic drive up to the town of Montezuma or to the Sapphire Point parking lot on Swan Mountain Road and enjoy the views. Another option to view the leaves is to rent a pontoon boat and peep the leaves from the middle of Lake Dillon.
What to Do in the Fall
To truly fall in love with autumn in Keystone, here are a few activities to delight the whole family:
-
Hiking & Biking: Cooler temperatures make fall the ideal time to hit the trails, whether you’re exploring mountain paths or cruising along the paved Summit County Rec Path.
-
Fishing: Cast a line in the Snake River or nearby Dillon Reservoir, where the fall backdrop makes every catch more memorable.
-
Golf: Keystone’s two award-winning golf courses, The River Course and Keystone Ranch, stay open until mid-October—meaning you can play a round surrounded by golden aspens.
-
Scenic Gondola Rides: Ride up to Dercum Mountain for incredible views, fall picnics, and the kind of crisp alpine air that clears the mind. The River Run Gondola will be open on weekends (Friday, Saturday & Sunday) through Sept. 21.
-
Festivals: Don’t miss the Oktoberfest festivals in Breckenridge and Arapahoe Basin, happening in September.
